The Environmental and Outdoor Education Specialist position was created as a part of a 2010 Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund grant received by the MN Department of Education (MDE). The position exists to implement the grant objective, to “integrate environmental and outdoor education in grades 7-12.” MAEE believes that mentoring and mini grants, like this project includes, are two important avenues for increasing EE in our schools. We believe the grant project is tangibly increasing the amount and quality of EE in our state.

The position has also been a great support to EE in our state, in general. This position has lead MN to be involved in the National Green Ribbon Schools awards program and has supported EE throughout the school system through trainings.

We believe this position is important for Minnesota’s students so that EE and outdoor education can continue to be promoted in our schools with support from the MDE.

"If we want our students prepared (for STEM jobs) ... then there is no better way ...
whether it is 2nd grade or eleventh or twelfth grade ... to do that than to
get kids out, in the outdoors, with environmental education"

- US Education Secretary Arne Duncan, April 16, 2013

MAEE has engaged its members to save EE at the MDE by writing letters to Commissioner Brenda Casselius requesting that the position be extended and considered permanent. Read the message that the MAEE Board sent: "Open Letter to Commissioner Cassellius to Keep EE at MDE"
