2021-2025 MAEE Strategic Plan

In the midst of a global pandemic, increasing climate change, and political uncertainty - the need for environmental education and an environmentally literate citizenry has possibly never been greater. And, with this context as a backdrop, the Minnesota Association for Environmental Education found itself at the end of its 2016-2020 five-year strategic plan, opening an opportunity for re-visioning and reimagining what the work of MAEE will look like in the next era.

Given the rapid change in the world, the board wanted to be sure to open itself to new possibilities and perspectives, and to ensure its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion was considered both in the strategic planning process and in the final plan itself.  The board wanted to be sure the process would align all board members around a refreshed vision and mission statement, identify clear strategic pillars, goals, and metrics for its work, and prepare the board to both take action and communicate powerfully with MAEE stakeholders about their new direction as of January 2021.  Finally, MAEE wanted the final strategic plan to be designed as a living document within which tactics can be shifted while keeping their north star constant.

With this in mind, the strategic planning process was divided into three distinct phases each with its own set of goals, outcomes, and deliverables:

  1. Inspire.  The first phase of our work, Inspire, had three key goals: 1. Understand and reflect on current board functioning, rules, and strengths; 2. Learn about what’s “possible” via other state boards and organizations; and,  3. Learn from stakeholders about what’s needed.
  2. Define.  The second phase of our work involved drawing from the landscape and empathy work and defining the strategic areas and key goals for what MAEE should focus on in the next era.
  3. Plan.  Finally, the board concretized the vision, mission, values, and initiatives in a written document that can be used to guide decision-making moving forward.

The Board of Directors is pleased to share with you an overview of its ambitous 2021-2025 strategic plan:
